Unit History:
Galway Bay Rally Rescue unit commenced operation in 1990 at the Galway International Rally where a shortage of Rescue Units led to the formation of Galway Bay Rally Rescue for this event. In 1990, the crew consisted of Ivor Gleeson, Ray Bent and Mike Mc Donnell. Since then, the crew has operated at all types of Motorsport events, in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. In 1996 the unit undertook training for assessment by the Royal Automobile Club Motorsport Association (MSA) and became fully qualified in 1998. The unit itself was brought up to MSA specifications and was licensed as an operational unit in 1998. Currently, five of the crew members are fully MSA licensed whilst the others are completing their traineeship with the unit. All members of the crew have undergone First-Aid training to 'Emergency Medical First Responder' level and attended training weekends in Belfast (both Extrication and Medical) run under the guidance of the MSA and futher training weekends in Southern Ireland run under the auspices of Motorsport Ireland and has been run by Officers from Dublin Fire Brigade and the O'Brien Institute. The Unit and Crew are assessed Annually by Motorsport Ireland and every second year by the MSA to ensure that we maintain the standards that are required for a Liscensed Rescue Unit. |
